“Safe Sparkle” Rally Outside the Ellen DeGeneres Burbank Studio
Fresno, Calif. (March 26, 2008) Due to Ellen DeGeneres’ public attempts to ban glitter, Kathy Cano-Murillo, the Crafty Chica, is staging a rally outside Ellen’s Burbank studio on April 8 to spread the message of practicing “safe sparkle”.
The “Safe Sparkle” rally is Kathy’s way of educating Ellen and her viewers on loose glitter alternatives that don’t leave behind the pesky flakes that the beloved TV host has come to hate. Kathy, a glitteraholic, believes glitter adds light and beauty to our troubled world and thinks Ellen would agree - if only loose glitter weren’t so messy!
At the rally, Kathy will be demonstrating various “safe sparkle" glitter applications, so Ellen’s fans can still share the sparkle - but not in a way that will annoy the hostess-with-the-mostess.
WHAT: Safe Sparkle Glitter Rally
WHEN: Tuesday, April 8, 2008.
TIME: Noon to ???
WHERE: NBC Studios, 3000 West Alameda Avenue in Burbank, Calif.
WHO: Anyone who wants to help Ellen find her inner glitter! All are welcome!
The rally is expected to draw a large crowd of supporters, including:
- Mark Montano (TLC Network host, and author of The Big Ass Book of Crafts
- Jenny Ryan (writer and blogger for Craft: magazine and founder of Felt Club)
- Cathie Filian (co-host of Creative Juice on the DIY Network)
- and members of the Los Angeles Craft Mafia, the San Diego North Park Craft Mafia - all gathering to spread the message of glitter tolerance and most importantly, “safe sparkle”.

In support of the glitter rally I felt the need to dress for the event and what better way is to get my glitter on!
I decided I wanted to embellish a jacket with the simple and direct message- I "heart" glitter.
Thinking back to the way cool font provided in the back of
Say It With Stitches
New Embroidery Designs for Letters and Words
(Click here to see another great project done with these letters!)
I scanned in the letters and enlarged them a bit.
Cut out the ones I needed. I only cut one out of each letter and roughly laid them out on the back of the jacket. I free-formed a heart out of glitter felt.
I flipped over each letter and traced it onto white felt. I used an air disappearing pen but you could use anything really as long as you were working on the back side. A tip on this is to drag the marker at an angle so the marker point drags less on the fibers of the felt.
After I had all the letters cut out and placed where I wanted them I glued them down. Another tip I have for you is to use a scrap of felt to mark the placement before lifting the letter up to apply glue to the back.
I then outlined all the letters and heart with GLITTER!!
So I have my outfit ready to spread the glittery-goodness next Tuesday!
And on another glittery note this is a fun Blog I just discovered:
