Emily Banis Stoehrer is a fashion educator and heads the Fashion Program at Fisher College in Boston. She was formerly a curatorial research associate in textiles and fashion at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Jay Calderin is director of creative marketing at the School of Fashion Design in Boston. He founded Boston Fashion Week and is creative director of Chengdu Fashion Week in China. He is the author of Form, Fit, and Fashion and Fashion Design Essentials.

Great crochet cross-over detail from the book Runway Crochet by Margaret Hubert

I simply love details that are easily doable. That is just what this cross-over detail from the Venus Racerback Tank crochet design is all about. This design (and many like it) are featured in the new book Runway Crochet: High-style Patterns from Top Designers' Hook to Yours!  It's made by simply eight lengths of single crochets in chains woven and tacked in place. I bet this would be a great way to alter a base garment and change it up just on the top.

Exotic shoes have been around for centuries. Sandals made of solid gold were found in the royal tombs of ancient Egypt. Six hundred years ago, women teetered around Venice inchopines with platforms up to a foot high. And in China, tiny golden lotus shoes were brightly colored and elaborately embroidered.  In the twentieth century, Salvatore Ferragamo introduced platform shoes and “invisible” sandals. Beth Levine invented sprint-o-lator mules and topless shoes held to the sole by adhesive. Roger Vivier created the concave stiletto and comma heels for his extravagantly bejeweled concoctions. The last two decades have seen an explosion of creativity in footwear design. Sexy laced-up sandals, sky-high platform heels, and outrageously decorated shoes are seen on fashionable women everywhere, from the catwalk to the street.
