By Jo:
October, it is one of my favorite months of the year. Summer
is finally over, the kids are settled back in school, the leaves are changing,
the air is cool, the holidays are not yet upon us, and it is the time I gather
all of my supplies and begin my newest quilt projects.
I am such an organizer that throughout the year as I collect
my fabrics, threads, buttons, and trims I immediately and lovingly store them
in my bottles, drawers, and suitcases. Everything in its place so that when
October arrives and I begin to quilt there is only the anticipation of what is
held in each of these containers and not the dread of wondering where I could
have put that perfect piece of lace or the vintage threads that are a must.
Not only do I love the supplies collected for quilting and
the containers to put them in, I love the books, and the quilters themselves.
Without their constant inspiration the joy of quilting would be more of a job
than a joy. How can you not create the most beautiful of quilts when you see
the designs of those quilters you love the most, when you read their stories,
see their workrooms, and learn their secrets?
My only problem is, which quilt to work on next? Is it
abstract with bold bright colors, is it vintage with faded plaids, or is it
lush with the colors and the flowers of the garden? Is it small so that it can
be finished by Market, is it finally the full-size one so that my talents will
be treasured for years to come, is it to be given away or kept for my own
family’s warmth on winter nights.
The deciding of it all is as much fun as the making of it …
so many ideas, so many fabrics, so many reasons. No wonder quilting is what I
love the most!
